The Boy Who Had An Unclean Spirit

5 Day Devotional

Day 1: From the Mountain to the Valley
Devotional: There is something beautiful about mountaintop moments with God. Those times of worship, prayer, and deep spiritual encounter can feel like the closest thing to heaven on earth. But if you have ever noticed, life does not stay on the mountain. Jesus Himself came down from the Mount of Transfiguration and walked straight into chaos, need, and human suffering. That is not a coincidence. It is a pattern. God meets us in the high places, but He calls us to carry His presence into the low ones. The valley is where people are hurting. It is where families are broken, where doubt runs deep, and where the enemy does his most visible work. Here is the encouraging truth. Jesus did not hesitate when He saw the need. He came down and stepped right into the middle of the mess. He did not wait for the situation to get easier or for the crowd to quiet down. He showed up, and His presence made all the difference. You may be in a valley right now. Maybe it feels like the chaos is louder than your faith. Take heart. The same Jesus who was glorified on the mountain is the same Jesus who walks with you in the valley. He has not changed, and He has not left you alone.

Bible Verse: 'Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.' - Hebrews 13:8 (King James Version (KJV))

Reflection Question: In what area of your life are you waiting for a mountaintop experience, when Jesus may actually be calling you to trust Him in the valley you are already in?

Quote: The presence of Jesus always makes a difference.

Prayer: Lord, thank You for meeting me not just in the high moments, but in the hard ones too. Help me to carry Your presence into every valley I walk through. Amen.
Day 2: Honest Faith
Devotional: One of the most relatable moments in all of Scripture is when a desperate Father looked at Jesus and said, 'Lord, I believe. Help thou mine unbelief.' He did not pretend to have it all together. He did not fake a confidence he did not feel. He was honest, and Jesus honored that honesty. Faith and doubt can exist in the same heart at the same time. That tension is not a sign that you are failing God. It is a sign that you are human. The question is not whether doubt ever shows up. The question is which one you choose to feed. Jesus did not rebuke this Father for His struggle. He met him right where he was. That is the kind of Savior we serve. He does not demand perfection before He moves on your behalf. He looks for the faith that is present, even when it is small, and He works with it. If you are carrying doubt today alongside your faith, you are in good company. Bring both to Jesus. Be honest with Him about where you are. He already knows, and He is not disappointed in you. He is ready to meet you exactly where you stand.

Bible Verse: 'And straightway the Father of the child cried out, and said with tears, Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief.' - Mark 9:24 (King James Version (KJV))

Reflection Question: What would it look like for you to be completely honest with God about your doubts, rather than feeling like you have to hide them?

Quote: If you cannot go as far as you’d like to go, then go as far as you can and ask Jesus to help you with the rest.

Prayer: Father, I believe, but I confess there are areas where my faith feels weak. Meet me in my honest struggle and grow my trust in You. Amen.
Day 3: The Power of Prayer and Fasting
Devotional: After Jesus healed the boy, His disciples pulled Him aside and asked a straightforward question. Why could they not do it? They had seen miracles before. They had been given authority. But this time, nothing worked. Jesus gave them a direct answer. This kind comes out by nothing but prayer and fasting. Some battles simply cannot be won on yesterday's spiritual momentum. Experience alone is not enough. Good intentions are not enough. There are moments when the enemy has dug in deep, and the only way through is a deeper level of surrender and seeking God with everything you have. Prayer and fasting is not about earning God's favor. It is about positioning yourself to receive what He has already made available. It is about quieting the noise of the world long enough to hear His voice clearly and to align your will with His. If you have been struggling with something that just will not move, consider whether God might be calling you to a deeper level of spiritual discipline. Not as a punishment, but as an invitation. He wants to meet you there, and the breakthrough you have been waiting for may be closer than you think.

Bible Verse: 'And he said unto them, This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting.' - Mark 9:29 (King James Version (KJV))

Reflection Question; Is there a persistent struggle in your life that you have been trying to handle through your own strength, when God may be calling you to seek Him more intentionally through prayer and fasting?

Quote: All we had to do was to fast and to pray. That’s the greatest thing that we can do to overcome the enemy in our life, is fast and pray.

Prayer: Lord, teach me to seek You with greater discipline and surrender. Where I have relied on my own strength, help me to lean fully into Your presence. Amen.
Day 4: Dying to Self, Living in Christ
Devotional: One of the quieter but more powerful truths woven through this story is about identity. When the disciples failed, the critics moved in fast. And it can be tempting, when we fall short, to let the voices around us define us. Criticism stings. But compliments can be just as dangerous if we start to build our confidence on them instead of on Christ. The Apostle Paul understood this. He said he died daily. He was not talking about physical death. He was talking about the daily choice to let go of his own reputation, his own pride, and his own need for approval. He said it plainly: 'I am crucified with Christ. Nevertheless I live. Yet not I, but Christ liveth in me.' When we die to self, we stop being shaken by what people say about us, good or bad. Our identity becomes rooted in something that cannot be taken away. Christ in us is the source of every good thing we have to offer. You do not have to perform for approval today. You do not have to shrink under criticism either. You are hidden in Christ, and that is the most secure place you could ever be.

Bible Verse: 'I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave Himself for me.' - Galatians 2:20 (King James Version (KJV))

Reflection Question: Are you currently allowing criticism or compliments from others to shape your identity more than your relationship with Christ?

Quote: I’ve learned to die to criticism. The Apostle Paul said, I died daily.

Prayer: Jesus, help me to die to the need for approval and to find my identity fully in You. Let it be Your life that others see when they look at me. Amen.
Day 5: Jesus Is Enough
Devotional: When you look at the scene in Mark 9, it is almost overwhelming. The critics had no answers. The disciples had no power. The Father had little faith. The boy could not help himself. Every human option had run out. And then Jesus stepped in. That is the moment everything changed. Not because the circumstances improved on their own. Not because someone finally figured out the right strategy. Everything changed because Jesus showed up. His presence was enough to do what no one else could do. That same Jesus is yours today. He is the one who bore your sin on the cross, who rose from the grave, and who ever lives to intercede for you. There is no promise too hard for Him to fulfill. There is no prayer too difficult for Him to answer. There is no problem too great for Him to solve. Whatever you are carrying right now, bring it to Him. You do not have to have it all figured out. You do not have to come with great faith or perfect words. You just have to come. He is still enough, and He always will be.

Bible Verse: 'Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by Him, seeing He ever liveth to make intercession for them.' - Hebrews 7:25 (King James Version (KJV))

Reflection Question: What situation in your life feels completely beyond human help, and what would it look like to fully surrender it to Jesus today?

Quote: The critics had no answer. The disciples had no power. The Father had little faith. The boy couldn’t help himself. But Jesus was enough.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, I bring You what I cannot fix and what I cannot carry alone. You are enough, and I trust You with everything I am facing. Amen.
